The Cambridge and District Humane Society (CDHS) operates as a
not-for-profit animal shelter in Cambridge Ontario. We are the support
system for the City of Cambridge’s animals, domestic and wildlife.
For almost 70 years we have developed programs to support and help
the lives of both the pets we care for and the people in our community.
Here are a few of the more impactful ways we are supporting Cambridge:
• Our Compassion Program has experienced a 43% rise in demand, providing
crucial emergency veterinary care and end-of-life support
for families and their beloved pets.
• The “Spay your Mama” Program provides a Spay certificate to pet parents
following an unplanned litter. The Shelter will place the kittens and puppies
in new homes, in return for covering the Spay expense.
• An Emergency Pet Food Bank Program supports pet owners who are
struggling with the increases in cost of living expenses by providing pet
food, and cat litter. Each year, we are seeing a rise in community need
for this program. This year to-date the Food Bank totals are: 1031 cats, 944
dogs, 27 small animals.
• Medical costs have been increasing each year with an annual total this year
we are projecting $160,000 just for medical expenses for Shelter animals
and through the Compassion Program. Every animal is assessed and given
the necessary veterinary care it requires to be ready for adoption. The costs
are not predictable, therefore hard to forecast for, so it’s important to build
a sustainable financial base we can draw on each year.
